If you're studying american politics, whent. I tell young political scientists, and i talk to them all the time, my first book was a phd. Thesis on the french, russian and chinese revolutions which was totally impractical. What i say is tackle puz s that somebody besides the profession cares about. You want puzzles that both the profession and your fellow citizens would care to hear answers to. And at the same time, you should also make sure that, as we do in the scholar's strategy network, you boil down your work into two pages of plain english.
