Once you have your sentence in place, think through what every word means and what it brings to your document. The next very important thing, i think, is that there is no mass audience. Even if you were writing commercial fiction, which typically is meant for the masses, there never really is a mass audience. Every reader is expecting something different from theyre reading. And you really need to tailor your communication to make sure that the reader is getting what they want.
