People don't respond well, in general, to doing things that they're told to do. People are more excited about things when it is their idea. It's a different conversation when you actually are become curious about another person and get them to come to those conclusions on their own. I think advocating for your needs does give you instant gratification all the time, but it does plant the seed in some one else's mind so that they can now become more aware or start to prioritize a ideas in their mind that weren't there before.
