The Mycenaean Empire and the Palaces
There's every reason to think that the palaces were almost exclusive consumers of imported luxury goods from places like Canaan and Egypt. Practically, all of the finds of these well-traveled goods have been at the palaces, not in villages or estates. Some scholars say access to exotic goods didn't just legitimate these rulers' authority, but actually created it in the first place. The value of those commodities was not symbolic but practical.
