The History of the Batavia Shipwreck
On June 4, 1629, the Dutch East India Company flagship the Batavia wrecked nearly 40 miles off Australia's coast. Francisco Pelsaier and Skipper Ariane Jakobs had come into this voyage distressing each other; animosity between them would only grow. The shipwreck helped establish many of Australia's heritage laws governing archaeological sites. It is on display at the Western Australian Museum in Fremantle.
