By the 1990s, nuclear power was producing its greatest share of the world's electricity. But then nuclear plants' start-ups began to decline because of economic and environmental reasons. Nuclear just can't compete economically with natural gas and with solar and wind. It takes 10 to 20 years of lead time to license and produce and test and bring online a new nuclear power plant. The IAEA has projected that by 2050, it will be down to about 5% or 6%.
