The Prefrontal Cortical Area of the Brain Is in a Goal Oriented State
In an unstressed state the brain operates in a goal directed way. When we're in a state of acute stress our levels of arousal change and at that point the prefrontal cortex abandons its goal directed symphony it's beautifully coordinated symphonic orchestra. This new state emerges actually responds to the stimuli in the environment at a lower threshold so you have an enhancement of emotional arousal of emotional reactivity of negative emotional bias. We do not just shine a brighter spotlight what happens is we dim down the spotlight on everything else, he says.
