The Legend of the Hellfire Club
"Do what thou wilt was the whole of the law," said Rabelasian monk Gargantua. A few centuries later, a certain English aristocrat named Sir Francis Dashwood would inscribe the credo above the door at a notorious clubhouse in Medmenum. The Hellfire Clubs grew out of a culture of hard-drinking social clubs that blossomed in Britain in the early 18th century. Stories started to circulate that members would openly blaspheme God, discuss atheism and enjoy pornography.
