Atherwald and Atherwald were both bonded to Alfred. It wasn't until nearly eight months after Alfred died that the Witan's choice was codified. The crowning of Edward needed to be done with proper pomp and religious weight. Kingston upon Thames would function as a concrete demonstration that Edward was continuing in his family's footsteps.
