Among modern roman historians, marius is famous for reforming the army. He also set precedents for using tribunition powers to effectively operate a dictatorship in the garb of a constitutional republic. By so doing, he paved the way for even more destructive civil wars and eventually the permanent takeover of the state by one man who would become known as the emperor.
