Jeffrey Hinton has been around since really late 70s. He moved from the US to Canada in early 1980s because he didn't want to take Pentagon funding for military uses of AI. In 2012, it was Jeffrey Hinton's team that created the first big deep learning neural net result. They showed that train down a lot of data and with a new on you could do way better at image classification than of any existing techniques.
