In 1939, World War II breaks out. Lea Nora and Max Ernst were living in the south of France by the time war broke out. He was imprisoned as an enemy alien because he was German. And she just found it very difficult to cope. She describes in some of her writing how she just thinks she says she sort of walks around aimlessly. At that point a friend of hers turns up, another artist who's driving through France. Her friend Catherine Yarrow persuades Lea Nora to go with her. But what they didn't know was that the doctor who ran the asylum was doing experiments into what would later be electric and valsy therapy.
