You don't need to know how to program in ruby on rails, or run a poisson regression. But what you do need to know is kind of have a 30 % knowledge about programming languages. How does a machine learning algorithm really work? What are the kinds of structured and unstructured data sets that are being fed into those machine learning algorithms? You also need to have some knowledge about statistics and confidence intervals and p values. The good news is most people can get there pretty quickly if they learn these things at an early age.
