In the 1960s, Len Rijio started working at the NYU bookstore. In 1971 he purchased Barnes & Noble, a one-story chain that had shriveled just one store. By the mid-1970s it built itself as the largest bookstore in the United States. Laura J. Miller is a professor and chair of Sociology at Brandeis.
