When students feel at risk, they don't want to think. So it turns out that risk is a barrier to thinking. When students are tasked with working on flip chart paper, they will not make a single notation for upwards of three minutes because this is not erasable. What I put here has to be perfect. There's a lot of agonizing and that hesitation leads to a lower form of thinking.
