In 19 18, karl buller proposed that the three functions of language are the expressive function, the signalling function and the descriptive function. And to thisp as the fourth, the argumentative function. So you can think of, say, a bird. A bird will chirp when it may be relaxed or sleepy. That wiuld just be expressing its internal state. It could perhaps chirp in such a way that it's trying to attract a mate. Yet you're signalling to something to stimulate a response from another organism.
