The Importance of Chong's Cross-Coloring in the 1990s

In 1997, homosexuality was still considered a mental illness in China. Chong's performances too seem to get bolder as he experimented with more cross-dressing. In the passion concert tour in 2000, with costumes by French designer John Paul Gautier, he took influences from drag culture. A psychotherapist Lee Bonning commented that Chong's performance was a presentation of a kind of mental and behavioral disorder. It even made Go Tae declare that he would never design stage outfits for a Hong Kong artist again.
