The calls of fin whales can get to around 189 decibels, which is enough decibels to make them detectable by seismometers that scientists use to find undersea quakes. The seismic waves coming back from the songs were strong enough to help scientists study the structure of the rock 8,200 feet below the ocean's bottom. Between 2012 and 2013, four seismometers in the Northeast Pacific Ocean were able to record six fin whale songs between 2.5 and 5 hours in length.
