The original definition of technical depth basically said there is a conscious decision so we go into depth and therefore we will ship features faster for some time. Martin Fowler's quadrant model if you think about it more closely is that he says well this is actually always the case. So in some cases it wasn't clear to you that you should really do things differently because things just are clear in retrospect when you think about them again.
