Google hired basically larry and sirge's friends, people from stanford. The recruiting started off is informal, but it ultimately became very, very structured. We were famously focused on the school you went to and your g p a, and not your experience. This caused all sorts of consternation, but it produced people who were both young in the sense of inexperienced. And in business, it produced people that were aggressive and ignorant of what they were doing. So our argument was that in a fast growing company, we need people who can pivot around,. whatever the new challenges.
The son of an economist, Eric Schmidt eschewed his father’s profession, first studying architecture before settling on computer science and eventually earning a PhD. Now one of the most influential technology executives in the world, he still however credits his interest in network economies and platforms for a large part of his success.
