The Process of Mind-Wandering
The key is that the attention is sustained somewhere. Awareness, that peripheral field in which everything emerges is undistracted and uninfluenced by where the attention is. Inevitable mind-wandering occurs. Awareness, aha of mind-wander shift back to focus. Sustained the attention, distraction, aware of distraction shift back to attention. And this loop goes on and on.
