The Destroyer in the Hebrew Bible
Every paragraph of the Hebrew Bible is designed in some way like this where the literary organization is actually an important clue to what the author is trying to say. So if passah means to defend, now we have a sense of who Yahweh is defending the house against and that is the destroyer. It's just called the destroyer. What's interesting is going back to the most ancient Jewish interpretations of this from before the time of Jesus, consistently the destroyer was identified as either an evil angel or Satan.
