Is There Consciousness at Work in AI?

So much hangs on whether we believe that there is consciousness at work as opposed to just functionality, functional intelligence. There's this sort of implicit idea that the moonshot goal of AI is to develop a system that is indistinguishable from a human being. I think this could be very dangerous that technology best serves us when it complements us, not when it tries to reinstanceiate or replace us. But how we respond is still a work in progress.
