The Risk of Post-Operative Delirium With General Anesthesia

There seems to be a good deal of scholarship on this topic. We really don't see a signal that indicates that general anesthesia increases the risk of post-operative delirium relative to regional anesthesia, Sam says. Most of the studies on this topic are conducted in older adults that were undergoing hip fracture surgery. It's difficult to know how generalizable this research might be to other populations or other types of surgeries. Ultimately, I think the decision to use general anesthesia or regional anesthesia has to be made in the appropriate clinical context and setting.
