Are Human Infants Conscious?

I was very surprised when I read this paper because it had never occurred to me that anyone would argue that a human infant wasn't conscious. Now, that just seems to me to be an astonishingly strange view. But this is an example of a line being drawn below which things aren't conscious. And the entire Cartesian tradition following from the Cartes' insistence that animals weren't conscious,. That consciousness was only a characteristic of humans. So this is all motivations for thinking that this idea of a dividing line is just a bad idea.
