Some of the best economists that I worked with were in the IAS, says Ravi Agrawal. The Indian Economic Service doesn't give you any guarantee going beyond economic advisor,. That's a joint secretary level job, whereas the IAS goes all the way above. So even today, the best economist given the choice would choose the former.
