Tontyonow: I can't think of a religious tradition which doesn't have story telling at its heart. The bible reflects that as an echo of that in the strongest sense of the word, as an echoing presence. We don't just stop being tellers and listeners of stories, but we also lose a sense of how stories convey truth - if we lose that, then we're in a different kind of jeopardy.
