The battle of cana was one of the most bloody events in antiquity and the worst military disaster yet faced by rome. Over forty five thousand romans were killed, nearly 20 thousand captured, and only about 14 thousand managed to escape. The terror inflicted upon the city was such that it compelled the romans to take pairs of men and women of greek and gallic origin and bury them alive as an act of human sacrifice.
