Democracy and Capitalism in the 20th Century
Before the capitalist age there were effectively no democracies anywhere. In the course of the 19th century democracy, not in our sense fully universal suffrage but increasingly white suffragists with political parties became an increasingly significant element for powerful states including Britain and America. There was a huge explosion in the number of countries that have adopted democratic systems in the 80s and 90s. Our economic system has generated huge increases in wealth for everybody ultimately,. nonetheless it's highly egalitarian, it generates huge concentrations of economic power - so there's profound tension between the two.
