The History of Punctuality

By the age of seven, clarence thomas had been abandoned by both parents. His mother became romantically involved with a man who had no interest in taking on her children. The constitution technically guaranteed them the right to vote, but there were poll taxes and literacy tests that made it basically impossible. Even if they'd been able to afford travelling to such luxuries, again, there was segregation. This is not the kind of upbringing you would expect somebody to be able to get a law degree and become a supreme court justice from.
