The Rise and Fall of Athens
At the height of its empire, it stood at one drop up per day. Unlike hop lights, whose service was intermittent, rowers constituted a full-time professional body. Because Athens generally maintained at least 100 ships on active service during the 5th and 4th centuries BC, its fleet must have provided employment for some 20,000 men. The Wealthier Greeks shunned work that made them subject to the commands of another person. Such a life, they believed, was demeaning to a free male citizen.
