What Is the Difference Between Light and Heavy?

Most of the world's oil is heavy, not light. What makes it heavy is long chains of hydrocarbons. If you have very long chain hydrocarbons, it takes a lot more energy to break down those molecules and create what you want out of them. So that's heavy versus light. The typical examples of light crude would be brand and WTI. And sour is just an indication how much sulfur crude has. Any less than 0.5% sulfur is sweet.
