Forensic shows are observational science, is so called. All you have is someone who has seen a lot of handwriting and believes that he can see details that others can't see. There's really the premises of science are not necessarily met in these cases. Judge nancy gurtner made an important ruling to highlight all the uncertainties behind that decision. She ruled that an expert could testify on how similar two handwriting samples were but not on how likely they were to have come from the same person. That sounds like an abstruse philosophical distinction.
