The Importance of Intellectual Property

In the final credits for an audiobook, it says in all capital letters, in bold, after I read the copyright notice, all rights reserved. It got me thinking, what does that even mean? There are certainly cultures around the world and have been for millennia where private property is a pretty strange concept. The way we've been treating intellectual property has always been different than the way we treat physical property.
