The Origins of the Niger River
Timbuk II was a city that was only legend to Europeans. It had risen the prominence in the 13th century as the key trading location of the Mali Empire, but no European had ever been there. The Niger River is 2600 miles long and takes one of the most unusual routes of any major river in the world. At Timbuk II, it turns southeast before dumping out into the Niger Delta, and then the Atlantic in what is modern day Nigeria.
