The idea that the individual is some fundamental unit has long roots, but became dominant. Across the board it was like a tide lifting all the disciplinary boats. Non-ideological is almost an artifact of the advent of mathematical modeling and before the advent of computer simulation modeling. When you look at Maynard Smith's Haystack model, which we will get to, one of the first models, it was a very important factor in the rejection of group selection.
