It was one of the departments of EMI Records in West London where audio gurus would dream up stuff. They pretty much invented this digital vocoder. The same effect was produced in the 50s by using a throat mic and talking at the same time. And it sounds exactly like a vocoder. So there's a microphone that would go on your neck?
