The land of akad lay, to the north of the urban heart land of southern mesopotamia. Cities were more distant from one another in northern mesopotamia and syria beyond. The language was different, acadian rather than merian - written with the same cuneaform script. This allowed sargon and his successors to wield power differently 'than even their most ambitious predecessors'
