The Problem With Gypsum Sheathing

Many houses built in the late 1950s, early 1960s have gypsum sheathing. It's basically drywall that they're using as exterior sheathing with no vapor barrier of any kind. You end up with high moisture loads on the exterior and air infiltration from the exterior to the interior. The question is do we get the exterior redone completely or replace it?
