In 2000 the Lib Dems said they were going to report Tony Blair William Hague to the Commission for racial equality if you use an inflammatory language about asylum seekers. At that point, William Hague pledged that a Tory government would herd all asylum seekers into detention centers regardless of their plight. The Guardian reported in 2000 that the then Labor Immigration Minister Barbara Roach had unveiled plans to set up more detention centers including new walled camps. In 2004, the home office was reportedly in talks with Tanzania to send failed asylum seekers from Somalia there and for some asylum seekers to be housed there while their applications were processed in UK.
