Frétigern was forced to gather all the Goths together, and he prepared for Vailins to come north with a Roman field army. As time went on, and they fought more battles and more skirmishes like the one Amionis described, they didn't get worse at fighting, they got better. This wasn't a blood feud or war to the knife. The Goths were rational, if righteously angry, actors who knew that their raiding activities constituted leverage for the settlement deal they still hoped to reach. After the Goths had scuttled his planned campaign against the Persians, Vaylins absolutely had to acquire a victory to bolster his prestige.
