Niger: A Landlocked Country in the Sahel

Niger sits in the Sahel, a band of fairly arid terrain that stretches right across West Africa. The northern half is essentially the Sahara Desert and the southern half has a pretty arid climate. It just rains two or three months of the year from sort of late June through to early September. So it's in a very fragile position geographically and climatically.
