Clara's Three Romances for Violin and Piano
By 1848, Clara had stopped composing again due to her punishing travel schedule as well as the responsibilities of raising so many children. But in 1853, the 20-year-old Johannes Brahms arrived in the Schumann's doorstep and blew both Robert and Clara away with his remarkable talent. Suddenly, Clara was composing again, writing 16 pieces in just 1853 alone. The first romances were remarkably passionate, showing a completely new side to her music. And though these three romances are dedicated to the great violinist Joseph Joachim, Clara's complicated feelings for Brahms along with her deep love of her increasingly alien husband are percolating throughout them.
