Voltaire's Introduction to English Literature
There is a low social status of commerce that permeates french life in the eighteenth century. Note, as you read the philosophical letters, voltaire's style, his manner of drawing a reader. In the text, he begins with a veiled and transitional voice. He moves from an innocent, naive, pious french catholic to a self confident new philosopher midway in the text. It is wonderfully voltarian to allow the reader to draw his or her own enlightened conclusions.
