Coup d'etat failed in 19 61, but the political passions behind it remained intense. It blew up with deadly consequences when algerian protesters flooded into paris. The police response was merciless and many historians believe more than a hundred people may have lost their lives. Many of the demonstrators were rounded up and held at sights used to keep jews on their way to the death camps during atrthe historian andrew hussey says what was most disgraceful about this incident was that everybody in paris knew what had happened, but tht it was all denied.
