In 1778, Carlo Bonaparte and Governor Marbuf managed to secure a place for Napoleon at a military academy in France. Brienne was not considered one of the best of the royal military schools, but admission into any of them was extremely competitive. Classes were taught in a foreign language, French. The language Napoleon spoke day to day with his friends and family was Corsican. He would soon come to speak and write French quite eloquently, but he never lost his course again accent.
