Asteroid hunters are largely amateur astronomers who have bought their own telescopes. They're out there night after night taking gorgeous images and looking for the things that move, reporting what they find in the Minor Planet Center because they're hoping to get the discovery credit. A school kid found the first notable fragment of an asteroid a few weeks ago; it was just awesome.
