I think it always helps to have a sense of what came before you. I do think that there are people that come to a discipline later in life. And if they're true geniuses can create a new language that's not mired in the past, that's far more risky than anyone that's working with the knowledge of the past might approach the possibilities. The biggest distinction is clients and creative briefs. When you're a designer and you're hired for an assignment, you are fulfilling the needs of a client. Now whether or not you can sneak in some of your own needs, if you can do that, great, wonderful. But an artist is essentially, their client is the public
