The Naturalistic Metaphor of Consumption

I particularly like the term social metabolism. Framing it is this naturalistic process of metabolism, I feel like is a potent metaphor. People talk about the marketplace in this very naturalistic way even though it's socially constructed and maintained through legal mechanisms or stuff. It feels closer to what's actually happening than when you break it down into all these different economic terms and processes.
