The Atlantis Eruption

The eruption of Thera was the catalyst for the decline of the Minoan civilization based on Crete. A mixture of gas, magma, and volcanic rock traveled fast in waves and burned everything within at least a 12 mile radius. The large port city of Akritiri, on the southern tip of the island however, was enclosed in 150 feet of pumice that has allowed it to be preserved to this day. There is clear evidence of Minoan influence with paved streets, an extensive drainage system, high-quality pottery, and further craft specialization.
